Participating in our community Green Spaces.

Green Butterfly is privileged to partner with the Department of Parks and Gardens in an effort to uplift and maintain some of our important Green spaces in Ghana. With so many recent ecological threats, Green Butterfly is dedicated and committed to encouraging our friends and all citizens to be more involved with our green spaces.

Our friends Manfred and Evelyn are “eco- adventurers” who have spent the last 7 months on the road from Austria to Ghana in their self-built camp-truck fondly named “Der Rote Jumbo” or “The red elephant”. The couple have driven across the African continent, through many different countries, in an effort to explore and get to know other cultures.

Manfred and Evelyn were warmly welcomed by our friends at the Aburi Botanical Gardens, where they camped for 3 days. We spent a lot of time with the couple, sharing stories and interesting ideas. “Der Rote Jumbo” is well equipped with various amenities that they built in themselves, including 2 moveable solar panels used to provide electricity via a built in power point. The couple loved the cool mountain weather – a big change from the heat in Accra and other places they had visited previously. They fell in love with the beautiful trees of all ages in the gardens, and expressed how much they loved the experience. “Der Rote Jumbo” has already driven through Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, Togo, Cote D’Ivoire, and Benin where there have been many interesting experiences. When asked what was their most interesting camping experience Evelyn said, “the curiosity of the people in rural villages especially, whenever they set up their camp truck.

A group of students approached us in the gardens, very curious about the camp truck and asking if they could take a peek inside, so the couple graciously allowed them to peek in one-by-one.

It would be great to see more campers with eco-friendly ideas visiting the Aburi Botanical Gardens to inspire our youth with ground-breaking ideas. There are many volunteer and learning opportunities available. Drop us a line if you are interested in finding out more. Email gogreenbutterfly@gmaill.com.
